Become a Trustee

Become a Board Member

We are currently recruiting for Trustees to join our Board.

  • Are you committed to supporting the work of a specialist service for survivors of sexual violence?
  • Do you have skills in (or would like to develop skills in) leadership, governance, strategy development, finance, human resources, communications, administration, campaigns, decision-making, community-organising, feminism, fundraising and more?
  • Have a minimum of five hours to spare per month?

We want to hear from you!

This is an exciting opportunity to join our team at The Compass Centre. We provide free and confidential information, support, counselling, and advocacy to any non-perpetrating person in Shetland, of any gender (age 13+), who has affected by sexual violence at any time in their life. We are an intersectional feminist and trauma-skilled organisation, and the successful candidate will be supported to learn and grow in their own practice and values-base. This is an excellent chance to gain experience in this sector, as well as contribute towards the direction of The Compass Centre. Board-related training, travel expenses, and expenses for care for dependents will be provided.

Role Purpose

The Board of Trustees have ultimate legal and financial responsibility for all activities of the organisation. They maintain an overview of policy and strategic direction rather than being involved in day-to-day operations. They may additionally be called upon for some recruitment and HR-related activities, as well as attending outreach events, and are encouraged to join team-building activities wherever possible.

Women from all sorts of backgrounds are welcomed to apply, and in the past we have had Trustees who were artists, accountants, academics, support workers, counsellors, full-time mothers, secretaries, in logistics, nurses, HR professionals, and more. What matters most is a shared values-base, openness to learning, and commitment to the work of the Board. Training and full-induction for the role will be provided.

"I've met lots of incredible women I never would have known and learned about the work they do, which makes me feel more hopeful in the face of the endless grim news we all see. I’d encourage anyone interested to get in touch and consider becoming a Trustee – all sorts of skills and experience can make a difference to combatting sexual violence in Shetland." - Siún Carden, Trustee for over 5 years & previous Chair of the Board.

Please note only women need apply under Schedule 9, Part 1 of the Equality Act 2010. We are committed to promoting equality and diversity and applications are welcomed from women of all backgrounds. We particularly welcome applications from black and minority-ethnic women, LGBT women, retired women, and disabled women.

We also encourage applications from survivors and ex-service users, but please be aware that we can only accept applications from ex-service users who have been more than 1 year out of service. If this is you, please follow the link to find out more about our ex-service user’s advisory group, OWL. Unfortunately, we cannot accept applications from current service users.
