BEE - Helpful Guide to University

We are BEE (Bold, Equal and Empowered), a young activist group at the Compass Centre. We have created this resource to highlight the unique challenges that young people in rural areas face when leaving home to attend further education. We have chosen to focus on Mental Health, Safety, and Spiking.

There is often a lack of support circles for Mental Health when attending university away from home. Safety is important due to the perceived safeness in Shetland compared to in a university city. We also chose to discuss spiking due to the prevalence in the media currently and to raise awareness for young people going to university, where drinking culture is prominent.

We hope that this resource can provide reassurance for young people travelling away from home for further education. We understand that growing up in a small community can often shelter young people from some aspects of city life, and while we need to consider these topics everywhere, an increased population can increase the risk of feeling unsafe.

safe at uni!
